Process

To accomplish this WebQuest, you will each be assigned to a group of five.  Then you and your group members will need to work both individually and as a team to complete the two parts of this assignment below:

  1. Each of you will become an expert in a different aspect of life in the Medieval Times.  You will then be teaching your group about the topic of your expertise.  To do this, you need to follow the steps below:
    • You and your group members need to choose who will be an expert in each of the following categories:
      • Food and Fashion
      • Music and Entertainment
      • Serfdom
      • Nobility
      • The Black Death                          **Only one person from your group may be an expert in a given category.
  • Next you will follow the links below that pertain to your area of expertise.  To become an expert, you need to carefully read and take notes on the material from each of these websites.  Your notes should focus on the essential information from each website.  Think about the following as you read each document: What facts do my group members need to understand about this topic?  Which facts are just fun details and which facts are necessary for us to know?  Click on each icon in your category to go to the informational website you need.

  •  Once you have finished learning about your topic, you will return to your group.  You and your group members will take turns teaching one another about your various topics.  You will work together to fill in a group “learning log” to keep track of what you have all learned from one another about the Medieval Times.  Click here to access your group’s learning log handout.

2.  After you have all shared your information and logged what was learned about one another’s topics, your group will choose one of the project assignments below and use your new knowledge to complete it together:

    • Compose one diary entry from the perspective of a noble and a second diary entry from the perspective of a serf.  Each diary entry should be 3-5 paragraphs long.  These should be written as a first person narrative.  Each diary entry needs to describe what daily life was like for that individual.  Each diary entry should include at least 4 essential facts based on the various topics covered in links from the WebQuest.
    • Create an original story set in the Medieval Times.  Your group’s story should have a main character that is either a serf/peasant or a noble and should be at least 250 words long.  Once your group has written the story together, you should each illustrate a picture to turn your story into a picture book.  This picture book should include at least five illustrations to accurately show different aspects of life in the Medieval Times.  The pictures should help tell the story and should be historically accurate based on the information you gathered.  There should be at least 8 essential facts based on the various topics covered in the links presented throughout the book.
    • Imagine that your group is a band of traveling minstrels.  Compose a poem/song in the same fashion as a Medieval minstrel.  Your group will then perform this poem/song for the class.  This performance should be entertaining and the poem/song should have a medieval rhythm/melody.  It also must explain at least 8 essential facts about different aspects of the Medieval Times based on the various topics covered in the links in order to express what your group learned.
